Maximise margin with Material Matters

Most of Europe is experiencing a financial crisis. Golf Clubs are no exception and need to ‘tighten their belts’ or they will be staring potential failure in the face.

Material Matters Ltd, were the first to recognise the benefits of golf buying groups and the first to the market in this space. They are now working with over 150 clubs across the UK, helping them with their purchasing across the complete spectrum of course and clubhouse supplies.

“Our aim from the outset was to create innovative purchasing solutions for our partners combining the highest quality of products and service with the considerable cost savings that can be achieved by combining purchasing power from many clubs” says Paul Mould, founder and Director.

Material Matters are helping save clubs money in all areas, utilities to grass seed, telephones to envelopes, photocopiers to potatoes and more. By their own admission food and beverage is the most complex area that they cover.

Simon Trundle, Head of Food and Beverage at Material Matters is really clear on where they add value. “We look to bring clarity, professionalism and cost effectiveness to foodservice operations, ensuring quality and value for both our partners and their customers. We help and support the club to achieve greater purchasing efficiency. We recognise that the needs of every club vary so we tailor our approach accordingly identifying the areas of opportunity. It’s not just about having one supplier solution. Our national agreements are supplemented by a comprehensive list of regional suppliers who are well placed to service the needs of the local market. We recognise the growing interest in sustainability and food provenance and are able to respond to these requirements across every food type.”

“Any solutions we may propose to increase clubs profitability will never be at the expense of the product quality, service or the clubs choice and independence. We will always strive to increase quality & service, not to compromise it.”

In these continuing tough trading conditions margin is vital though. Working with Material Matters gives you the peace of mind that you are buying competitively and that your prices are being professionally managed at all times.

Club savings in excess of ÂŁ20,000 per year have already been made – what club can afford not to look at Material Matters Ltd as their purchasing partner?

Material Matters fast out of the blocks in 2012

The news on how much of a difference Material Matters can make to golf clubs with cost savings has spread so fast that they have kicked off 2012 with the launch of four new representatives. The Midlands, West Country,Outer London & Kent and the South Downs will all now have their own regional manager on the ground. Paul Mould Founder and Director  of Material Matters explains:

“We form such a close working partnership with our members. We work together in terms of analysis, planning and implementation of cost savings across the whole of their purchasing needs; it is essential that we have experienced and quality people on the ground to support the clubs. When we started in 2010, Hampshire, Berkshire and Surrey soon became our heartland, but we quickly expanded our geography. It is crucial that we are now able to deliver the same high level of hands-on assistance from the Midlands, right across to the South. Now we need to find good people to work with, who can deal with the large number of clubs that have been approaching us from across the UK.

”Material Matter’s appointment as the UKGCOA’s Official Purchasing Partner, along with a steady flow of recommendations and referrals, has provided Material Matters with opportunities as far flung as Scotland, Newcastle, Shrewsbury, Cornwall, Suffolk, and beyond.”

Simon Trundle, head of clubhouse expenditure for Material Matters has a very clear view on the latest expansion. “From the very beginning, we have focussed on levels of actual trading with our members, in order for us to provide an effective and benefit- driven service. By operating in this way, we will always be so much more than just a list of preferred suppliers. We set our targets on saving an 18-hole golf club in excess of £20,000 per year. In order to deliver that level of benefit we have to be constantly on hand, developing solutions and strategies for every aspect of how the club is managing and developing their business.

”Just for good order Material Matters are also on the move – they are moving into new offices at the prestigious Windlesham Golf Club, in Berkshire. Paul is delighted with the new move:“

What an amazing operation for us. A fantastic location, which puts us slap bang in the middle of a busy and thriving golf business, so we can live and breathe the daily needs of a club even more. The move gives us the opportunity to have almost a shop window for what is possible in purchasing terms and the location is ideal from a travel and logistics point of view. Trust, flexibility and accountability have been our bi-words from day one, and the new offices and regional representation are key parts in that continuing mission. Our aim is to be golf’s purchasing partner of choice, and with well on the way to 200 clubs already purchasing with us, we will build the support to ensure success for our partners and suppliers.”

Can any club afford not to talk to Paul Mould?

Paul is the founder of Material Matters Ltd and is a very interesting man to know. His company is focused on making substantial savings for golf clubs, course maintenance, ranges and resorts by centralised buying. Material Matters Ltd have recently formalised a partnership agreement with the UKGCOA.

Jerry Kilby, Executive Director of UKGCOA is delighted with the new agreement:

“UKGCOA is pleased to announce the appointment of Material Matters Ltd as the Official Purchasing Partner of the UKGCOA. After looking at a number of possible purchasing companies, Material Matters have been selected as they can assist golf course owners with all sectors of purchasing – including the golf course maintenance supplies, clubhouse bar and restaurant supplies, utilities and all other clubhouse consumables.

In recent months, Material Matters have conducted purchasing reviews at 85 golf courses, and have achieved average savings of 11.2%, with the highest saving being 25.6%. There were only three occasions when it was found that Material Matters could not make any significant savings.

In addition to saving you money and improving your bottom line, Material Matters are offering toreimburse UKGCOA members their 2012 annual membership fee, if they place a minimum of £10,000 of purchasing with them during the course of 2012 – making their membership free of charge – as well as adding to your bottom line!

You will lose nothing – and potentially gain a lot – by inviting Material Matters to conduct a full  purchasing review at your golf facility.”

GRN-OGRO recently caught up with Paul Mould and asked him about the business.

Paul gave a detailed interview to the magazine about his life, career and what drove him to become a successful businessman in the world of golf.
